Our vagina goes through various changes throughout our lifetime, influenced by our hormones and life events. Understanding these changes can help us feel more comfortable with our bodies and take appropriate care of our vaginal health. Let’s take a closer look at how our vagina evolves during different stages of life.
Puberty (8-13 years): During puberty, estrogen levels increase, and the vagina begins to mature. This is when we experience our first menstrual period, and our bodies start experiencing sexual sensations and urges.
20s: In our 20s, our labia (the inner and outer lips of the genitalia) may grow in size and change colour. This is a normal variation, and there is no one “right” size or colour. Pubic hair may also get thicker and change colour. Inside the vagina, our bodies are at their prime childbearing years, with good pelvic floor strength. If using birth control, changes may occur depending on the method chosen.
30s: This is the time when many individuals are postponing childbirth, and pelvic floor muscles are getting weaker due to age and gravity. It’s important to start doing Kegel exercises to strengthen the pelvic floor and prevent conditions like pelvic organ prolapse. If you’ve had a vaginal birth, your vagina may have stretched during delivery. Kegel exercises can help regain some tightness.
40s: Estrogen levels begin to decrease, leading to decreased collagen and blood flow to the vulva. This can make the labia appear looser. Pubic hair may also thin out and turn grey. The pH of the vagina can increase, and any changes in odour or discharge should be checked by a doctor.
50s and beyond: In our 50s, we enter menopause, and the menstrual cycle comes to an end. Vaginal dryness is common during this time, which can significantly interfere with sexual activity. Using synthetic lubrication and increasing foreplay can help alleviate discomfort. The physical appearance of the vulva may change, with thinning and wrinkling of the skin.
It’s important to remember that these changes are normal and expected. If you have concerns about how your vagina is changing, it’s always best to consult your gynecologist or healthcare provider.
