Are you looking to improve your core strength, build muscle, improve your balance, and increase flexibility while getting a customized workout? to take your workout to the next level? If so, a reformer Pilates class at A Step Above Wellness Centre may be just what you need!
What is a reformer Pilates workout? While traditional pilates is typically done on a mat, reformer pilates utilizes a special machine called a reformer. This machine offers a wide range of benefits, making it a popular choice among fitness enthusiasts.
Reformer Pilates provides a more precise and controlled workout, allowing you to isolate and target specific muscles. It also offers support for those with back problems or injuries, making it a great option for rehabilitation. Additionally, the machine’s resistance helps to lengthen your muscles and build strength.
So, how does the reformer machine work? Picture a bed frame, but instead of a mattress, it has a platform on wheels. This platform rolls up and down as you perform the exercises. The machine also features stretchy cords that attach to your feet or hands, which can be adjusted to create different levels of resistance.
This type of workout focuses on belly breathing, which enhances postural control, achieving a state of balance during any posture or activity.
To get started with reformer Pilates, it’s best to take a class or work with a certified Pilates instructor, (like we offer at A Step Above Wellness Centre!). During the class, you will experience some of the following moves, based on the class being offered, your individual needs, your fitness level and flexibility.
- Footwork: Start by lying on your back with your feet on the footboard. Press your feet against the footboard and straighten your legs, then bend them back in. Repeat this movement for a set number of repetitions.
- Leg circles: Lie on your back with your legs straight up in the air. Use the straps attached to your feet to create resistance and draw circles in the air with your legs. Start with small circles and gradually increase the size.
- Pulling straps: Sit upright on the carriage with your feet pressed against the footbar. Hold onto the straps and pull them towards your shoulders, engaging your back and arm muscles. Release and repeat.
Our certified instructors will encourage you to listen to your body, perhaps starting with lighter resistance, fewer repetitions and other modifications as needed, all in a relaxing and rejuvenating space. As you gain strength and familiarity with the machine, you can increase the intensity of your workouts. The reformer machine can provide an amazing workout for your core, as well as your arms and legs.
Whether you’re recovering from an injury or simply want to challenge yourself in new ways, the reformer machine can help you achieve your goals. So, why not give reformer Pilates a try? It offers a unique and effective way to take your fitness routine to the next level.
