Movement is more than exercise. It requires your muscles, joints, breathing, balance and nervous system to work together.
At A Step Above Wellness Centre®, Guided Movement provides individualized movement support based on your current abilities, assessment findings and goals.
Sessions may use Mat-based movement, Pilates-informed exercises, Reformer-based movement and other appropriate movement tools to help you improve coordination, build functional strength and become more confident with movement.
Guided Movement may be used during an active care program or as part of your longer-term maintenance and healthy-aging plan.
WHAT IT SUPPORTS
What Guided Movement Supports
Guided Movement helps translate what we learn through assessment into purposeful movement. Depending on your individual needs, sessions may focus on:
Muscle Coordination Helping muscle groups work together more effectively during movement.
Core & Pelvic Coordination Supporting coordination between breathing, abdominal muscles, trunk control and the pelvic region.
Balance & Stability Building greater control and confidence during standing, changing positions and everyday movement.
Mobility Supporting comfortable, controlled movement through an appropriate range.
Posture & Movement Awareness Helping you recognize movement patterns and develop more efficient strategies.
Functional Strength Progressing strength in ways that support everyday activities and individual goals.
Movement Confidence Providing a guided environment for people who may be uncertain about how or where to begin moving again.
HOW IT IS USED HERE
More Than a Pilates Class
Guided Movement at A Step Above Wellness Centre® is not structured as a traditional Pilates studio or general fitness class.
Movement is selected according to the individual's:
- assessment findings
- current function
- health considerations
- movement tolerance
- goals
- progress and response
Pilates principles and equipment may be used when appropriate, but Pilates is one method within Guided Movement — it does not define the service. The goal is to help you take what we learn through assessment and apply it to movement that matters in everyday life.
THE ROLE OF THE REFORMER
The Reformer Is a Tool — Not the Program
The Pilates Reformer provides adjustable resistance and support that can be useful when teaching and progressing movement.
Depending on your needs, it may help us work on:
- controlled movement
- core coordination
- lower- and upper-body strength
- balance and stability
- mobility
- movement awareness
- gradual progression of resistance
Some sessions may use the Reformer extensively. Others may use Mat-based exercises, standing movement, a chair or other appropriate tools. Your movement goals determine the tools we use — not the other way around.
WHO IT MAY BE APPROPRIATE FOR
Who May Benefit From Guided Movement?
Guided Movement may be appropriate for adults who want individualized support with:
- reduced strength or deconditioning
- core coordination
- balance or stability
- posture and movement patterns
- mobility
- returning to movement following a period of inactivity
- rebuilding confidence with movement
- healthy aging and maintaining independence
- progressing after an initial care program
- maintaining improvements achieved through care
It may also be appropriate for people who do not feel ready for a traditional fitness environment and would benefit from a more individualized starting point. Movement is adapted according to the individual's current abilities and relevant health considerations.
CORE-TO-FLOOR™ + GUIDED MOVEMENT
Turning Pelvic & Core Strength Into Functional Movement
The pelvic floor does not function independently from the rest of the body.
Breathing, abdominal pressure, trunk control, hips, posture and movement all contribute to how the pelvic region functions during everyday activities.
Within Core-to-Floor™, Guided Movement may be used to help translate pelvic and core activation into activities such as:
- standing and sitting
- lifting
- reaching
- bending
- walking
- balancing
- carrying
- progressing strength
Not every person receiving Core-to-Floor™ care requires Guided Movement.
When it is recommended, the goal is to help connect what is happening “on the chair” or during treatment to how the body functions during real movement.
Emsella is treatment; Guided Movement helps address movement and coordination when that is relevant to the person's broader plan.
HEALTHY AGING & FUNCTIONAL STRENGTH
Strength for the Things You Want to Keep Doing
Maintaining strength, balance and mobility becomes increasingly important as we age.
Guided Movement may be incorporated into a Healthy Aging & Functional Strength plan to help individuals continue working on:
Strength • Balance • Mobility • Coordination • Movement Confidence • Functional Independence
The goal is not simply to complete exercises.
The goal is to help build physical capacity for everyday activities and the things that matter to you.
FROM RESTORE TO STRENGTHEN
Movement Progresses With You
Guided Movement can serve different purposes at different stages of care.
RESTORE Begin with controlled movement, breathing, coordination and rebuilding confidence.
STRENGTHEN Gradually increase challenge, resistance and functional strength according to your abilities and goals.
THRIVE Transition toward greater independence, ongoing physical activity and a sustainable movement routine. This connects directly to the ASAW journey:
ASSESS → UNDERSTAND → RESTORE → STRENGTHEN → THRIVE
ONE-TO-ONE GUIDED MOVEMENT
Individual Support
One-to-one sessions allow movement to be selected and progressed around your individual needs.
This may be particularly useful when:
- beginning a new movement program
- working with specific assessment findings
- rebuilding movement confidence
- learning unfamiliar movements
- progressing after a period of reduced activity
- working toward individualized functional goals
Your program can evolve as your movement and confidence improve.
SMALL-GROUP GUIDED MOVEMENT
Progressing Together
When appropriate, Guided Movement may also be provided in a small-group format.
Small groups are intended for individuals whose abilities and movement goals are appropriate for shared instruction.
They allow participants to continue working on strength, mobility, balance and coordination in a supportive environment while maintaining a more individualized approach than a traditional large fitness class.
Participation in a small group depends on suitability and current functional ability.
MAINTENANCE
Care Does Not Have to End When the Initial Program Ends
For some clients, Guided Movement becomes an important part of maintenance.
After completing an initial phase of care, ongoing Guided Movement may help you continue working on:
- functional
- strength
- balance
- mobility
- core coordination
- movement quality
- confidence
- independent physical activity
The goal of maintenance is not to create dependency on the clinic.
It is to help you continue using and building the abilities you have developed.
That statement is important enough that I would keep it on the public page
PHYSIOTHERAPY COLLABORATION
When Additional Assessment Is Appropriate
Guided Movement does not replace physiotherapy.
When symptoms, movement findings or changes in function indicate that physiotherapy assessment may be appropriate, referral or collaboration can be recommended.
Where physiotherapy is involved, physiotherapy assessment, treatment and recommendations remain within the physiotherapist's professional scope.
Guided Movement can then support appropriate movement progression within the individual's broader plan.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Your Guided Movement Session
Your first sessions begin with understanding your current movement ability and goals.
Depending on your plan, your session may include:
Breathing and coordination → Mat-based movement → Reformer-based movement → balance → mobility → progressive resistance → functional movement
You will not be expected to perform movements simply because they are part of a standard Pilates routine.
Movements are selected and progressed according to you.
Wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely.

One terminology point I would keep under review For the public website, my preference remains Guided Movement, not Guided Movement Therapy. Internally, you can describe the program's therapeutic purpose and its role within a patient's care plan.
Publicly, Guided Movement gives you the clinical-functional positioning you want without unnecessarily implying that the service itself is a separately regulated therapy.
This page now has enough substance to stand alongside Emsella, TheraLight 360, Medical Foot Care and the assessment pages rather than looking like an afterthought or a Pilates studio page. It also gives Guided Movement a clear role in Core-to-Floor™, healthy aging, functional strength, recovery and maintenance without suggesting that every patient needs it.
